I'd never heard of "Aventurine Jade" until I saw this monkey figurine on the bidding block at eBay.As it turns out, it's not really jade, but quartz. The glistening effect is called aventuresence, which is due to the presence of mineral inclusions.
The word "aventurine" comes from the Italian a ventura ("by chance"), reflecting its lucky discovery in the 18th Century. The green variety (it also comes in cream, gray, or orange), comes mostly from India.
This one came to me from Hong Kong.
