As it turns out, it's not really jade, but quartz. The glistening effect is called aventuresence, which is due to the presence of mineral inclusions.
The word "aventurine" comes from the Italian a ventura ("by chance"), reflecting its lucky discovery in the 18th Century. The green variety (it also comes in cream, gray, or orange), comes mostly from India.
